That represents a gain of about 8.2% since the start of August.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-449525e e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"449525e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-124ca11 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"124ca11\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Expectations for US Federal Reserve (Fed) policy have been one of the biggest influences on gold. The metal does not pay interest, so its relative attractiveness generally improves when investors expect interest rates to fall. Conversely, expectations of higher rates can support the dollar and Treasury yields, increasing the opportunity cost of holding bullion.<\/p><p>During the first half of August, softer US employment data and subsequently less threatening inflation data reduced expectations of an imminent Fed rate increase. Gold responded positively, helped by a weaker dollar.<br \/>However, the policy picture remains unusually uncertain. Inflation is still above the Fed&#8217;s 2% target, while higher energy prices associated with Middle East tensions could reignite inflationary pressure.<\/p><p>Divisions among policymakers have therefore kept markets alert to the possibility that rates could remain higher for longer.<\/p><h3>Geopolitics drives safe-haven demand<\/h3><p>The continuing <strong>US-Iran war and uncertainty surrounding negotiations<\/strong> have provided another important source of support. Concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, energy supplies and the wider economic consequences of conflict have encouraged demand for traditional safe-haven assets. Oil prices rose as US-Iran negotiations faltered, while gold benefited from renewed geopolitical risk.<\/p><p>There is also an important complication: a sustained oil-price surge can increase inflation and potentially discourage central banks from cutting rates. Consequently, geopolitical tensions can simultaneously support gold through safe-haven demand while creating a headwind through higher inflation and interest-rate expectations.<\/p><p>For British gold savers, the <strong>US dollar\/sterling exchange rate<\/strong> is almost as important as the dollar gold price itself.
