It is a question I hear regularly at our Green Street showroom, particularly from customers buying a first piece of gold jewellery in the UK. Someone may have grown up wearing 22ct gold at home, while their partner has always bought 18ct jewellery.<\/p>

Both are genuine gold. The difference is how much pure gold they contain, how they behave when worn and what type of jewellery they suit best.<\/strong><\/p>

What does 22ct gold mean?<\/h2>

22-Karat-Gold enth\u00e4lt ungef\u00e4hr 91.6% reines Gold<\/strong>. You may also see it described as 916 Gold<\/strong>, referring to 916 parts of pure gold per 1,000.<\/p>

The remaining percentage consists of other metals added to give the gold enough strength to be made into jewellery.<\/p>

That high gold content gives 22ct gold its distinctive, rich yellow colour. It is also one reason it remains so popular for traditional Indian, Pakistani and South Asian jewellery.<\/p>

18ct gold contains 75% reines Gold<\/strong>, with the remaining 25% made up of other metals.<\/p>

Because there is a greater proportion of alloy metals, 18ct gold is harder than 22ct gold. It is widely used for contemporary jewellery, diamond jewellery and pieces designed for frequent wear.<\/p>

18ct gold can also be made in different colours, including yellow, white and rose gold, depending on the alloy used.<\/p>

The important point is that higher purity and greater hardness are not the same thing<\/strong>.<\/p>

18ct gold is generally the harder of the two, so it can be a practical choice for jewellery that receives frequent knocks or friction.<\/p>

Rings are a good example. They are constantly exposed to surfaces and can take more wear than a necklace that sits around the neck.<\/p>

That does not mean 22ct gold should only be kept in a jewellery box.<\/p>

Many people wear 22ct chains, bangles and earrings regularly. The key is choosing an appropriate design and taking reasonable care of the piece.<\/p>

Why does 22ct gold have a deeper yellow colour?<\/strong><\/h2>

Pure gold has a naturally rich yellow colour.<\/p>

Because 22ct gold contains more pure gold than 18ct, its colour is generally deeper and warmer.<\/p>
