Diwali & Dhanteras — Why Gold?
Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Across Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and many other South Asian communities, it is also the most commercially and spiritually significant time of year to buy gold. The tradition is rooted in the association of gold with Goddess Lakshmi — the goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity — who is worshipped during Diwali puja. Buying or gifting gold during Diwali is believed to invite her blessings into the home and to bring abundance in the year ahead.
Dhanteras (two days before Diwali) is specifically the day dedicated to gold buying. The word Dhan means wealth — and on this day, purchasing gold, silver, or other precious metals is considered especially auspicious. In the UK, Dhanteras has become one of the single busiest days of the year for gold jewellery purchases, second only to wedding season.
Why Buy Your Diwali Gifts from PureJewels, Green Street?
- 50+ years of Diwali gold gifting: PureJewels has been the go-to destination for Diwali gold gifts for the South Asian community in East London and across the UK since the 1970s. Our Green Street showroom is a fixture of the Diwali gold buying tradition in this community.
- London Assay Office hallmark on everything: Every piece of gold jewellery, every gold coin, and every gold bar we sell is independently hallmarked. This matters especially at Diwali, when increased demand creates opportunities for sellers of substandard or mislabelled pieces.
- Limited-edition Diwali silver coins: Each year, PureJewels releases a limited-edition silver coin featuring Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha — minted exclusively for the festival. These are the most popular Diwali gift in our collection and sell out every year.
- Wide range covering every budget: From a 1g gold bar from under £100 to a heavily worked 22ct gold necklace set — our Diwali collection covers every gift budget and every recipient, from a child’s first Diwali to a grandmother’s heirloom piece.
- Visit us on Green Street before Diwali: Our showroom at 290–292 Green Street, London E7 stocks pieces not yet listed online, including in-store Diwali specials. Visit us in the weeks before Diwali for the fullest selection.
What to Gift at Diwali — A Complete Guide
Gold Jewellery — The Traditional Diwali Gift
Gold jewellery is the most culturally significant Diwali gift — worn to the Diwali puja, to parties, and to family celebrations. Popular choices include gold chains and pendants for younger recipients, gold bangles for women, gold rings for men, and gold earrings (especially jhumka) for all ages. Our 22ct gold Diwali jewellery collection includes everything from a lightweight 2g daily wear chain to a statement 20g+ necklace.
Gold Coins — Auspicious on Dhanteras
Gifting a gold coin on Dhanteras is one of the oldest Diwali traditions. Our Royal Mint gold coins — including the Gold Britannia and Gold Sovereign — are VAT-exempt, CGT-exempt, and globally recognised for resale. Our Lakshmi and Ganesha gold coins are the most popular Diwali coin gift in our collection — a piece of genuine 24ct gold that carries both spiritual and financial value.
Gold Bars — For the Investor in Your Life
A gold bar is the most straightforward way to give the gift of gold value. Our Diwali gold bars from LBMA-approved refiners (PAMP Suisse, Baird & Co, Heraeus, Valcambi) are available from 1g upwards. The 20g Baird & Co Diwali bar — featuring relief engravings and individual serialisation — is a particularly popular Diwali piece.
Diwali Silver Coins — Limited Edition
PureJewels releases a limited-edition silver coin each year for Diwali, featuring designs of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. These are in 999 fine silver and are available in extremely limited quantities each year. Subscribe to our newsletter or follow us on social media to be notified when this year’s edition is released.
Diamond Jewellery — for a Contemporary Diwali Gift
For a more contemporary Diwali gift, our 18ct diamond jewellery — pendants, earrings, and rings — combines the auspiciousness of gold with the sparkle of certified natural diamonds. Every diamond piece comes with an IGI certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is gold bought on Diwali and Dhanteras?
Gold is bought on Diwali — particularly on Dhanteras, the first day of the five-day celebration — because of its association with Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu deity of wealth and prosperity. Buying gold on this day is believed to invite her blessings into the home and to bring abundance in the coming year. The tradition has deep roots in Hindu culture and has become the biggest gold-buying occasion of the year in UK South Asian communities, equivalent to Christmas gifting in Western culture.
What is the best gold gift for Diwali?
The best Diwali gift depends on the recipient and your budget. For children, a small gold coin or lightweight gold chain. For women, gold jewellery — bangles, earrings, or a pendant — in the £150–£500 range. For men, a gold ring or bar. For a senior family member or as a significant gift, a heavier jewellery piece, a gold coin from the Royal Mint, or a gold bar all combine cultural meaning with real financial value.
