Your Complete Guide to Buying a 22ct Gold Chain
A gold chain looks deceptively simple — but the link style, the length, the weight, and the clasp type all make a significant difference to how it wears and how long it lasts. Here is everything you need to know before you choose.
Gold Chain Length Guide — Men & Women
Chain length determines where the chain sits on the body — and how it looks with different necklines and outfits. Here is a practical reference:
| Length | Sits At | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 14″ / 35cm | Tight to throat – choker | Standalone statement; sari necklines |
| 16″ / 40cm | Base of throat | Daily wear ladies chain; sits above kameez |
| 18″ / 45cm | Collarbone level | Most versatile ladies length – pendant chains, standalone |
| 20″ / 50cm | Upper chest | Men’s daily wear; ladies layering chain |
| 22″ / 55cm | Mid-chest | Men’s statement chain; ladies mala-style |
| 24″ / 60cm | Below the chest | Heavy men’s chains; pendant chains to sit low |
| 26–30″ / 65–75cm | Stomach level | Heavy statement men’s chains; lariat-style ladies |
For men: 20″–22″ is the most common everyday length. If you have a broader chest or neck, add 2″ to whatever length you would normally choose — it will sit at the same visual position but with more comfort. For ladies: 18″ is the most versatile — it works under a kameez, over a top, and with most pendant designs.
Choosing a Chain for Your Pendant
Not every chain suits every pendant. Here is what to match:
Pendant & Chain Matching Guide
- Religious pendants (Om, Allah, cross, Khanda): A box chain or foxtail chain at 18″–20″. Both sit flat and do not compete with the pendant’s detail. Aim for a chain that is 1.5–2mm wide — slim enough to be secondary to the pendant.
- Initial / personalised pendant: A fine foxtail or spiga chain at 16″–18″. These pendants are often delicate — a lightweight chain keeps the total weight manageable for daily wear. 2–4g total (chain + pendant) is the target.
- Heavy stone-set pendant: A box chain or rope chain at 1.5–2mm minimum width. A flimsy chain under a heavy pendant will twist and kink over time. The chain must support the pendant’s weight — check the combined gram weight before ordering.
- Mangalsutra / religious chain with pendant: Traditionally a black bead chain is used in Hindu mangalsutra, but a fine 22ct gold chain for everyday wear without the traditional beading is increasingly common. A 16″–18″ box or foxtail chain in 2–3g is the typical choice.
- Layering (multiple pendants or chains at once): Choose chains with different lengths (16″, 18″, 20″) and different widths. Keep all in the same metal — 22ct yellow gold throughout. Avoid clashing link styles at the same length, as they will tangle.
What to Watch Out For When Buying a Gold Chain
- Hollow chains sold by length rather than weight: A chain can look heavy and still weigh almost nothing if it is hollow. Always check the gram weight, not just the mm width. A 4mm-wide hollow chain might weigh 4g; a 4mm solid rope chain weighs 15g+. The price difference is substantial — and so is the durability.
- Gold-plated chains marketed as “gold chains”: Gold-plated chains use a base metal (usually brass or silver) with a thin gold coating that wears off within months. All PureJewels chains are solid 22ct gold — there is no plating involved. Check for the 916 hallmark.
- Chains with no clasp weight rating: The clasp on a heavy men’s chain takes significant stress. A lightweight lobster clasp on a 20g chain is a failure waiting to happen. Our heavier chains use appropriate clasps — but check this when buying elsewhere.
- Price per gram below the current gold rate: If the price per gram implied by the listing is below the daily gold rate, the chain is either plated, hollow, or a lower carat than stated. Use our gold price calculator page to check whether a price makes sense.
