Why Choose 22ct Gold for a Wedding Band?
A wedding band is the highest-use piece of jewellery in existence — worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, through every activity of daily life. This makes the choice of gold purity genuinely significant, not just aesthetic.
22ct gold (916 purity) is the traditional South Asian choice for wedding rings — it contains 91.6% pure gold, giving it the richest, deepest yellow colour available in jewellery gold. It is the gold that three generations of South Asian families in the UK have understood as the real thing. 18ct gold (750 purity) is harder due to its higher alloy content — marginally more scratch-resistant for identical designs — but the colour is noticeably less rich. For a plain wedding band that will be worn daily, both are excellent choices; for a deeply yellow, traditionally meaningful piece, 22ct gold is the clear answer.
Why Order from PureJewels, Green Street?
- 50 years of wedding ring experience: PureJewels has been fitting wedding bands at Green Street since 1975. We understand the weight of this purchase — not just the grams, but what it means. Every wedding band we sell is treated with that seriousness.
- Solid 22ct gold — not hollow, not plated: Hollow or plated bands look identical in a photograph. A solid 22ct band is different in weight, in feel, in durability, and in intrinsic gold value. Every band at PureJewels is solid throughout, hallmarked by the London Assay Office.
- Engraving service: We engrave wedding bands with names, dates, initials, and meaningful symbols. Prices from £75. Allow at least one week for engraved orders — more during peak wedding season (May–September). Contact us via Live Chat before ordering.
- Custom sizing and resizing: Most wedding bands can be made to a specific size if the standard S or T doesn’t fit. We also resize many bands at our Green Street workshop. Contact us to discuss before ordering.
- Free first-order size exchange: If your wedding band doesn’t fit, we exchange it at no charge on the first order. We also send ring sizers on request — contact us via Live Chat.
22ct Gold Wedding Band Styles
Plain Polished Wedding Band
The most traditional form — a smooth, continuous ring in 22ct gold with a high-polish mirror finish. No texture, no decoration. The ring itself is the statement. Available in flat, court (dome), and comfort-fit profiles. Flat bands look best on square or long fingers; court profiles are the most comfortable for daily wear. From £280 for ladies; from £330 for gents.
Satin / Brushed Finish Band
The same plain profile as a polished band, with a matte, brushed finish that creates a softer, less reflective appearance. More forgiving of fine scratches than polished — they blend into the surface rather than showing as bright lines. Popular with men who find the high-polish ring too formal for everyday wear.
Diamond-Cut Wedding Band
Precision facets cut into the outer surface of the band at regular angles, creating a textured surface that reflects light in multiple directions simultaneously. More visually active than a plain band without the addition of any stones. Available in full diamond-cut and stripe patterns (alternating polished and faceted sections). Popular for both men’s and women’s bands.
Engraved & Patterned Bands
Bands with hand-engraved floral, geometric, or traditional motifs — or with custom text engraving on the inner or outer surface. Our engraving team can work with initials, dates, names, and simple symbols. Prices from £75 for engraving. Allow at least one week.
Heavyweight Gents Bands
Wider, heavier bands for men who want a significant presence on the hand — 7mm to 10mm widths in 10g to 20g+ weights. A wide 22ct gold band in a satin or diamond-cut finish is one of the most culturally meaningful pieces a South Asian groom can receive or choose. From £650 for heavier gents bands.

Ring Sizing for Wedding Bands
Wedding bands should fit securely but should not be forced on and off — they need to pass over the knuckle comfortably. Fingers change size throughout the day (larger in the morning and evening, smaller at midday) and across seasons (larger in summer, smaller in winter). For a wedding band, measure your finger at the end of the day in warm weather for the most reliable fit.
UK Size | Circumference | Most Common For |
L | 49.7mm | Slim ladies fingers |
M–N | 50.9–52.2mm | Standard ladies band size |
O–P | 53.4–54.7mm | Wider ladies or slim gents |
Q–R | 55.9–57.2mm | Standard gents band — most common |
S–T | 58.4–59.7mm | Standard to larger gents hand |
U–V | 60.9–62.2mm | Larger gents hand |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose 22ct gold for a wedding band over 18ct or 9ct?
22ct gold (916 purity) has the richest, deepest yellow colour available in jewellery gold — the colour that South Asian families have understood as the real thing for generations. It contains 91.6% pure gold, giving it significantly higher intrinsic value than 18ct (75%) or 9ct (37.5%). For a plain wedding band worn daily, 22ct is an excellent choice — solid construction, genuine hallmarked gold, and a colour that does not fade. 18ct is marginally harder due to higher alloy content, which may matter for very intricate designs, but for a plain or simple patterned band, 22ct is the more meaningful and more valuable choice.
Can I get a 22ct gold wedding band engraved?
Yes — we engrave wedding bands with names, dates, initials, and simple symbols. Engraving from £75, allow at least one week. We send a proof for approval before engraving any piece. Contact us via Live Chat or visit our Green Street showroom to discuss options. We strongly recommend visiting in person for wedding band engraving decisions.
How do I find the right size for a wedding band?
Measure your finger circumference at the end of the day in warm weather — fingers are at their largest at this point. Match to the UK letter size guide above. For a wedding band, we recommend a fit where the ring passes the knuckle comfortably but is not loose on the finger. If you are between sizes, consider your climate — fingers are larger in summer and smaller in winter, so a ring that fits well in summer may feel loose in January. We offer a free ring sizer on request via Live Chat.
Can you resize a 22ct gold wedding band after purchase?
Yes — most plain and simply patterned 22ct gold bands can be resized at our Green Street workshop. Resizing is easier going up than down. Heavily engraved or patterned bands may not be resizable without affecting the design — ask us before purchasing if resizing is a concern. We also offer a free first-order exchange if the size is wrong on your first purchase.
