It’s a tradition for Indian babies to wear a thread of black around their wrist, believed to ward off evil spirits. Although the meaning may have worn off a little, people still love to dress babies in traditional jewellery, and baby bangles (nazar kada) are now popular in East and West.
In the UK, the Victorians started to buy kids’ bangles; London jewellers had the idea of engraving tiny bangles with the word ‘baby’, or a pattern or motif. This developed into the personalised baby bangles that you can find today (see our Rose Gold baby bangle, and just ask if you’d like it in a different kind of gold).
