Is Gold Jewellery Hypoallergenic?

< 1 min read

Gold jewellery is generally hypoallergenic, particularly when crafted in high-purity gold such as 18ct, 22ct, or 24ct. This means it is unlikely to cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, making it a preferred choice for those with sensitive skin.

However, the key lies in the purity of the gold and the metals it is alloyed with.

Understanding Allergies in Gold Jewellery

Pure gold (24ct) is naturally hypoallergenic, but because it is soft, it is often mixed with other metals—such as copper, silver, nickel, or zinc—to improve durability.

  • 18ct and 22ct gold, which contain 75–91.6% pure gold, are typically very safe for sensitive skin.
  • Nickel, sometimes used in lower-carat gold (9ct or 14ct), is a common allergen. If you’re sensitive, it’s best to avoid jewellery with nickel alloys.

The PureJewels Standard

At PureJewels, we craft fine jewellery in 18ct, 22ct, and 24ct gold, with careful attention to quality and composition. Our gold is hallmarked by the UK Assay Office, and we do not use nickel in our gold alloys.

If you have specific sensitivities, our team will be happy to guide you toward the most suitable metal options for your skin.
