Your Complete Guide to Buying 22ct Gold Earrings
Gold earrings are the most purchased item in Asian jewellery — they are affordable entry points, meaningful gifts, and daily wear staples. But the range of styles can be overwhelming. This guide breaks down what each style actually is, how much it weighs, and which occasion it is made for.
Types of 22ct Gold Earrings Explained
Every style in our earrings collection serves a different purpose. Here is what you are actually buying when you choose each type:
Stud Earrings: Weight: 0.5 – 2g per pair · From ~£90
A single decorative element sits directly on the earlobe with a post and butterfly back. The lightest style. Suitable for all-day wear, work, and sleeping in. Safe for newly pierced ears. Plain ball studs, floral, and geometric designs available.
Hoop Earrings (Bali): Weight: 1.5 – 5g per pair · From ~£150
A circular or semi-circular earring that passes through the piercing. Classic gold bali hoops are a staple of South Asian daily jewellery — a small plain bali is practically universal. Larger hoops make a statement; smaller ones disappear into any outfit.
Jhumka Earrings: Weight: 4 – 14g per pair · From ~£200
The most recognisable earring in South Asian jewellery. A dome-shaped upper section with a hanging bell (the jhumki) beneath. The bell jingles slightly when you move. Traditional jhumkas hang from a post or hook; modern designs sit on a stud with the jhumki suspended below. Available plain, engraved, or with stone detail.
Chand Bali Earrings: Weight: 6 – 20g per pair · From ~£320
Named after the crescent moon (chand). A crescent-shaped frame, often elaborately worked or stone-set, with a central drop element. The traditional choice for weddings, receptions, and festive occasions. Heavier and more statement-making than a jhumka — these earrings are the focal point of a look.
Drop / Ear Dropper: Weight: 2 – 8g per pair · From ~£180
A single drop element that hangs from a post or hook — simpler than a jhumka, more elegant than a stud. Very versatile: plain gold teardrops work as well at an office event as at an evening function. A practical middle ground between stud and statement earring.
Chandelier / Bahubali: Weight: 12 – 35g per pair · From ~£650
Large, multi-layered earrings that cascade down the side of the face — inspired by the bahubali earring style popularised in South Indian cinema and bridal culture. These are worn with a lehenga or heavy bridal saree. Not designed for everyday wear due to weight — use an earring support sticker if wearing for a full day.
Lightweight Gold Earrings for Daily Wear
If you wear earrings every day, weight is the most practical consideration. The ear piercing can be stretched or irritated by heavy earrings worn for extended periods. Here is what to look for:
Best Choices for All-Day Wear
- Gold studs (0.5–1.5g): The lightest option. Can be worn sleeping, in the gym, and in the shower without damage to the earring or piercing.
- Small bali hoops (1–3g): A classic daily wear choice across all South Asian communities. Plain polished gold bali earrings sit close to the ear and move without catching.
- Lightweight drop earrings (2–4g): If you want a little movement without a heavy jhumka. Look for open-frame or hollow-backed designs that keep the weight down despite the visual size.
- Earrings with a post back rather than a hook: Posts are more secure for daily wear and put less pressure on the piercing. Hooks can stretch the piercing over years of daily use.
Avoid for Daily Wear
- Earrings above 8g per pair worn for full working days — they will fatigue the earlobe over time.
- Hook-back earrings with heavy drops — the leverage on the piercing is significant over a full day.
- Stone-set earrings worn in the shower or gym — moisture and soap can damage settings and loosen stones.
Gold Earrings by Occasion
Office / Daily
Studs, Small Bali, Plain Drops
Under 3g. Post-back or click-in hoop. Plain yellow gold or minimal design. Works with everything from shalwar kameez to a business suit. Choose a style you forget you are wearing.
Party / Evening
Jhumka, Chand Bali, Statement Drops
4–10g. Worn for a few hours — weight is less critical. This is the range where traditional jhumkas and patterned drops sit. Pairs best with a sharara, anarkali, or party saree.
Wedding / Reception
Chand Bali, Chandeliers, Bahubali
10–35g. Designed to be worn for a ceremony or reception — not all day. Use earring support tape if wearing for 6+ hours. These earrings are the centrepiece of a bridal look and coordinate with the necklace set.
Eid / Diwali Gifting
Jhumka Sets & Gift Earrings
A pair of jhumka earrings is one of the most culturally appropriate Eid and Diwali gifts — suitable for any age. A simple pair of 22ct gold jhumkas (4–6g) sits comfortably in the £200–£300 range and comes boxed and ready to gift.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gold Earrings
What are jhumka earrings?
Jhumka (also spelled jhumki or jhoomka) are a traditional South Asian earring style defined by a dome or cup-shaped upper section and a bell-shaped or rounded drop hanging below — the jhumki. The word comes from the Hindi/Urdu for “swinging” or “hanging.” They are the most culturally significant earring style in Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi jewellery traditions, worn at weddings, festivals, and celebrations. At PureJewels, our jhumka earrings are crafted in 22ct gold and range from 4–14g per pair.
Are 22ct gold earrings safe for sensitive ears?
Yes — 22ct gold is one of the safest choices for sensitive ears. The high gold content (91.6%) means less alloy metal, and gold itself is hypoallergenic. Most earring allergies are caused by nickel, which is present in some lower-carat gold alloys and in silver-plated or rhodium-plated earrings. If you have had reactions to earrings before, 22ct gold is the right choice. For newly pierced ears, 22ct gold posts are suitable once the initial healing period (6–8 weeks) is complete.
What is the lightest style of gold earring?
Gold stud earrings are the lightest style — typically 0.5–1.5g per pair. Small plain ball studs are under 1g. After studs, small plain bali hoops (1–2g per pair) are the next lightest option. If you want something with movement but minimal weight, look for open-frame drop earrings in the 2–3g range — these look larger than their weight suggests because the frame is hollow or open.
How do I clean 22ct gold earrings?
Fill a small bowl with warm water and add a few drops of mild washing-up liquid. Soak the earrings for 10–15 minutes. Use a very soft toothbrush to gently clean around settings, in textured areas, and along the post. Rinse under clean running water and dry thoroughly with a soft lint-free cloth before storing. Do not use toothpaste, baking soda, or abrasive cloths — these scratch the gold surface. For stone-set earrings, avoid soaking if stones are glued rather than set — check with us if you are unsure.
